WITH ONE MENTION OF LAURA'S NAME, FACES LIGHT UP.
A natural lover of adventure. A true believer in love. Warmth. Ambition. Dancing, shopping, fashion – her beloved Western Bulldogs. Effortless style. Uncontrollable laughter. Basking in the sun. Diving into the water.
Her driven, determined nature had her excelling in a public relations degree where her infectious energy would draw friends easily. Laura’s beauty and brilliance is indelible in the hearts of everyone she touched; her family and friends were the centre of her life – and her to theirs.
Laura never let herself be put in any one box and moved through any of her many friendship circles with grace and ease. Although she approached everyone in her open, undemanding way she never had reservations about pushing boundaries or being her true self. No one was a stranger to her – or to her spontaneity, warmth and generosity.
Always a vibrant soul, with a warm spirit and smile, when Laura took her own life in 2009 no one saw it coming. Her family and friends were left devastated and adrift by her loss as although she was surrounded by those who loved her, she had never shared her mental health struggles.
The love that Laura shared has only grown in the ten years since her passing, and inspired by her passion, generosity and love the Spread the Laura Love Charity Gala aims to do just that: spread that love in raising funds to help prevent suicide, and promote mental health awareness through R U OK?
THERE ARE EIGHT
DEATHS BY SUICIDE IN
AUSTRALIA EACH DAY.
Since 2009 R U OK? has grown from modest beginnings to become one of Australia’s most successful mental health and suicide prevention campaigns by asking a single question: R U OK?
Through tireless campaigning and fundraising since its inception R U OK? has been instrumental in putting, and keeping, mental health on the national agenda through empowering friends, family and communities to reach out, connect and talk about mental health.
Laura’s family have chosen R U OK? to help raise awareness and much-needed funds, and invite you to honour Laura’s memory at the Spread the Laura Love Charity Gala or please donate to this fantastic cause below.
WE NEED YOUR HELP
In what is set to be a fantastic night of entertainment, our mission is to raise as much money as possible for R U OK? on behalf of Laura. In order to do so, we need your help. We are asking individuals and businesses to dig deep and donate auction items - whether it be a product or experience. Should you wish to donate an item but aren’t sure exactly what to offer, please get in touch and we can help!
Generously donated items will be offered as part our silent or live auctions at the charity gala dinner, with all funds raised being donated to R U OK? Your company logo and a short description of your business will appear in the evening's programme, as well as on rotation on the digital screens throughout the night.
We gratefully thank and acknowledge the generosity of all our sponsors and donors in raising funds for suicide prevention and mental health awareness.
In the ten years since Laura’s passing, her brother Marcus has always felt the desire to honour Laura’s memory and legacy. Her warm smile and generosity of spirit has inspired this charity event for family, friends and supporters to come together in celebration of her life, and to raise funds for a cause that resonates so strongly within Laura’s community.
Knowing Laura’s selfless nature, Marcus feels she always wanted to give something back to others and that fundraising for such an important cause, and helping break the taboos around mental illness would have been something Laura wanted to happen.
Myer's luxury Mural Hall venue will host the Spread the Laura Love Charity Gala where guests will enjoy a delicious three-course dinner including beer, wine and soft drink in a sparkling setting.
Hosting the night will be stand-up comedian, actor, television and radio presenter, Dave O'Neil as MC and we'll hear from special guest speaker, Founder of Love Me Love You Foundation and former AFL footballer, Lance Picioane. The Baker Boys 8 piece band, DJ Perri Lee and Ashley James on the Sax will entertain throughout the night, as well as a live charity auction, raffle draw prizes and silent auction, providing guests with the opportunity to bid on a range of generously donated items and raise much-needed funds to help prevent suicide.
